OBA Awards 2019 – Winners Announced!

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 9th Annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards!

The OBA Awards are presented in seven competitive categories and honor the best in commercial and not-for-profit Off-Broadway theatre. Click here for a full list of this year’s nominees and here for past winners.

The recipients of this year’s awards were honored with a ceremony at Sardi’s on June 18th.

As previously announced, this year’s Legend of Off Broadway Honorees are Rita Gardner, Albert Poland, and Avenue QAlvin Epstein, María Irene Fornés, and Ntozake Shange will be posthumously honored with induction into the Off Broadway Hall of Fame. The Friend of Off Broadway Award will be presented to Frank “Fraver” Verlizzo for his award-winning graphic designs and continued dedication to Off Broadway.

2019 Off Broadway Alliance Awards Nominations

We’re pleased to announce the nominees for the 9th Annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards! Awards are presented in seven competitive categories: Best New Musical, Best New Play, Best Musical Revival, Best Play Revival, Best Unique Theatrical Experience, Best Solo Performance, and Best Family Show.

In addition to the competitive awards, three Legend of Off Broadway Awards will be presented for sustained achievement in the world of Off Broadway. The 2019 honorees are general manager and producer Albert Poland, veteran actress Rita Gardner, and the long-running musical Avenue Q.

Legendary playwrights Ntozake Shange and María Irene Fornés and award-winning actor Alvin Epstein will be posthumously inducted into the Off Broadway Hall of Fame.

Graphic designer Frank “Fraver” Verlizzo will be honored with the Friend of Off Broadway Award.

Competitive category winners will be announced on Tuesday, May 22nd, and the awards ceremony will take place at Sardi’s on Tuesday, June 18th at 4PM. A complete list of competitive nominees follows. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and nominees!

The Off Broadway Alliance, the organization of Off Broadway producers, theaters, general managers, press agents, and marketing firms, will hold the next event in its Seminars series focused on the Off Broadway Producing Process on Saturday, May 4th, 2018.

The seminar, titled “Puttin’ on the Hits: Selling Your Off Broadway Show” will feature top theatre professionals discussing how to devise strategic marketing campaigns for commercial Off Broadway productions through effective use of grassroots marketing, press opportunities, paid advertising and social media. Our panelists will include Elizabeth Findlay, Vice President of Media and Client Services at AKA NYC; Hugh Hysell, head of the full-service theatrical marketing firm Hysell Marketing; and Ron Lasko, founder of Spin Cycle, an innovative cultural communications company. Producer Robert Driemeyer (La Cage aux Folles, Tennessee Williams’ The Two-Character Play) will moderate.

“Puttin’ on the Hits” will be held on the 3rd floor of The Theater Center (210 West 50th Street). Check-in will begin 10:30am for networking and complimentary coffee and bagels. The panel discussion will take place from 11am to 12:30pm with additional time allotted afterward for conversation with fellow attendees.

Admission for the seminar is $5 (to partially cover the costs of presenting the seminar), and pre-registration is a must. The Off Broadway Alliance will hold its next Saturday Seminar on Saturday, January 26th 2019.

The seminar, titled “My First Time,” will feature commercial theatre producers discussing their first time at the helm of an Off Broadway production. Panelists will include Randy Donaldson, whose Broadway and Off Broadway credits include American Son, The Scottsboro Boys and Triassic Parq; Suzanne Gilad, co-founder of In Fine Company whose credits include the Tony Award-winning revival of Angels in America and Off Broadway’s The Other Josh Cohen; Zachary Laks, co-founder of Form Theatricals and producer of Drew Droege’s Bright Colors and Bold Patterns (directed by Michael Urie); and Meredith Lucio, whose credits include the Tony Award-winning revival of Porgy and Bess, and Bedlam’s Hamlet and Saint Joan. Producer Robert Driemeyer (La Cage aux Folles, Tennessee Williams’ The Two-Character Play) will moderate.

As previously announced, this year’s Legend of Off Broadway Honorees are Jo Bonney, André de Shields, David Rabe, and Mary Testa. Donald Farber – the theater attorney who quite literally wrote the book on Off Broadway – and the great playwright and actor Sam Shepard will be posthumously honored with induction into the Off Broadway Hall of Fame. Carol Rosegg, who has photographed hundreds of Broadway and Off Broadway productions, will be honored with the 2018 Friend of Off Broadway Award.

New Saturday Seminar Podcast – Is There Life After After Off Broadway?

Missed our last Saturday Seminar? Never fear! Audio from the event is now available on our Podcasts page. The seminar – titled “Is There Life After Off-Broadway?” – featured experts on touring, licensing, and streaming discussing the options for a show after it has ended a successful Off Broadway run. Our panelists included Victoria Lang, a founder and managing member of Off Broadway Touring, a boutique agency dedicated to the promotion, booking, and management of Off Broadway-sized productions; Bruce Lazarus, executive director of Samuel French Inc., the world’s oldest and largest publisher and licensor of plays and musicals; and writer-director Dewey Moss, who discussed his experience with live-streaming a performance of his play The Crusade of Connor Stephens. The discussion was moderated by our own Hugh Hysell.
