CONTRACTING FOR OFF-BROADWAY PROJECTS

The seminar will feature Adam Hess (General Manager for Buyer & Cellar, Traces and My Name is Asher Lev), David Elliott (Producer of Bedlam’s Hamlet and Saint Joan, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, and the upcoming Broadway production of Dames at Sea) and attorney Peter Breger (Disaster!, Forbidden Broadway, The Two Character Play, The Fantasticks). Hugh Hysell (Director of Marketing and Development for NYU Skirball and producer of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and Peter and the Starcatcher), will moderate the discussion.

TIME:  Doors open at 11:30am for complimentary coffee and bagels. The panel will take place from Noon – 1:30pm with additional time allotted afterward for conversation with fellow attendees.

About The Panelists:

Adam Hess is the Executive General Manager of DR Theatrical Management overseeing the Theatre (venue), Management, Advertising, and Licensing divisions within the Daryl Roth organization. Over the course of the last 13 years, he has supervised the construction of the DR2 Theatre, the renovation of the main venue, creation of the D-Lounge, the formation and development of the general management company, and the establishment of the advertising division. General Management credits include Buyer & Cellar (New York & national tour); My Name Is Asher Lev; Love, Loss, And What I Wore (New York & national tour); The Divine Sister; Through the NightDear Edwina; The Temperamentals; Die! Mommie! Die!; Manuscript; and Thom Pain. Hailing from Toronto, Mr. Hess holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan and is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where he received an MFA in Theatre Management and Producing. He currently serves on the Board of the Off-Broadway League and is Chair of the Marketing Committee.

 

David Elliott is the Co-Director of Perry Street Theatricals. Producing credits include Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Tony Award and Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Play, Lend Me A Tenor The Musical (West End, Olivier nom.), Bedlam’s Hamlet/Saint Joan (Culture Project), an oak tree (Barrow Street, OBIE), In the Continuum (OBIE), Exits and Entrances (Edinburgh), Shylock, Treason (Perry Street), The Exonerated (Drama Desk, Lortel, Outer Critics). As General Manager: Bedlam’s Hamlet/Saint Joan (Culture Project), Date of a Lifetime (New Jersey Rep), Ethel Sings: Espionage in High C (The Beckett), White People (Atlantic), an oak tree (Barrow Street), and two seasons at Perry Street Theatre. Upcoming: Dames at Sea (Broadway), My Life is a Musical (Bay Street) and The Mapmakers Opera (NYMF).

 

Peter Breger is an entertainment attorney and general manager who has represented theatre and film producers, investors, commercial and non-profit theatres, writers, directors, and performers for over 25 years. He is a Tony-nominated producer of Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatre. He owned and operated The Actors’ Playhouse in Greenwich Village for 12 years. Mr. Breger is the Chairman of the Off Broadway Alliance.

 

Hugh Hysell is a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer and award winning marketer. His Broadway producing projects include Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (2013 Tony Award and Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play), Peter and the Starcatcher (winner of 5 Tony Awards) and Impressionism. Off-Broadway, he has produced, conceived and directed The All-Male Importance of Being Earnest, Y-2-Gay the Musical and Seamen the Sailor Musical. Hugh is Director of Marketing and Development for NYU Skirball and formerly ran HHC Marketing where he has served as marketing director of over 200 Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. He serves on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Multicultural Diversity Action Committee and is an Associate Professor at Columbia University. He is currently playing Maurizio in the Off-Broadway companies of My Big Gay Italian Wedding/Funeral. He has provided pro bono services to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, HRC, GLAAD, QSAC, and The Commercial Theatre Institute. He is a founding member of The Off Broadway Alliance and currently serves as a nominator for the Off Broadway Alliance Awards.
